Paper Abstract:      Annotations tools allow users to complement existing documents with comments, suggestions or other information. Currently, desktop annotation tools are much more sophisticated than those available for annotating web documents, such as web pages or multimedia content. EspiritUs is a Web Services based system designed to allow users to create, share, and search annotations on the web. In this article we analyze in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the existing web annotation tools focusing on what EspiritUs offers new. We present the adopted architecture, which is based on XML technologies, namely Web Services and XML, describe the system implementation and present two possible annotation scenarios – a standalone client-side tool, which allows to make general annotations in all the web documents, and an annotation engine to be used on a web application, which allows the annotation of web documents in a specific domain. Finally we present some conclusions and guidelines for future work for this project
